Grow Up

Does the game ever end?

1 Corinthians 13:11 (ESV) “When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.”

When does a child become an adult? Does one ever truly grow up or do we “grow up” when we resolve to becoming a lifelong learner? Am I speaking, thinking, and reasoning like a child when a new challenge arrives? When will I truly become an adult giving up childish ways?

Proverbs 22:6 (ESV) “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”

Are we “grown” when we realize the parents training us were really just trying to figure it out themselves? Will I continue to trust the spiritual truths I learned as a child to ground me as I grow older?

Luke 2:40 (ESV) “And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him.”

Are we all on a journey of learning as we seek to “grow up”? Do we learn to identify and follow patterns of success in our quest for strength and wisdom? Does the equation of pain = drive = action = results propel us to continue to desire to grow?

Prayer: Help me to continue to “grow up” daily, O God! Thank You for the challenges You allow and the opportunities You provide for me to develop radical self-reliance. Guide me as I seek to answer questions that fill my mind on my never-ending personal journey of growth.
